Science being ‘debunked:’ Why are some countries making a vaccine U-turn?

(CNN)More than a century before Facebook, anti-vaccination campaigners had another method for spreading their message — an eye-catching march through town with tiny children’s coffins emblazoned with the words: “Another victim of vaccination.” British parents in the 19th century didn’t take kindly to government-mandated smallpox vaccinations although the gruesome process — a series of deep cuts in the arms of the child — was a world away from today’s sterile practices. But the anti-vaxxers of the time were also joined by libertarians, who believed the compulsory vaccinations violated their personal freedoms. Today, that anti-government control sentiment “continues to be a thread in the anti-vaccine movement — particularly in this era of mistrust in government,” Professor Heidi Larson, director of the …

Mexican drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzmn is found guilty on all counts

New York (CNN)Drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmn Loera, who once headed a criminal enterprise that spanned continents and triggered waves of bloodshed throughout his native Mexico, was found guilty Tuesday of all 10 federal criminal counts against him. US District Judge Brian Cogan confirmed the verdicts with each of the eight women and four men on the jury, telling them later their conduct on the panel “made me very proud to be an American.” One of Guzmán’s lawyers described him as “extremely upbeat” after the verdict. “He’s a fighter,” defense attorney Michael Lambert said. “He’s not done yet by far.” After jurors left the room, Guzmán waved and smiled at his wife, Emma Coronel, a former beauty queen and …

African black leopard photographed for the first time in over 100 years, scientist says

(CNN)Turns out, the mythical African black leopard really does exist. Pilfold said they captured the footage after months of watching and waiting. His team of biologists had placed remote wildlife cameras to track the leopard population near a conservancy in Laikipia County last year when they heard reports of a possible black leopard sighting. “We intensified our camera placement in the area the reports were being made,” he said Tuesday night. “Within a few months, we were rewarded with multiple observations on our cameras.”       The female leopard’s coat color is pitch black as a result of melanism, a gene mutation that results in an over-production of pigment, Pilfold said. It’s the opposite of albinism — and although …
