The Year That Broke TV And Paved The Way For The Reality Show Era

Consider this: In 1999, there was no Tiffany “New York” Pollard. The exploits of Bethenny Frankel and Countess LuAnn de Lesseps were unknown to us. Millions of people did not tune in every night to see the sexcapades of twentysomething strangers looking for love on a secluded island. TV — particularly the reality television landscape — was completely different. Variations of what we’ve come to know as reality television date back to the game shows of the 1940s and 1950s, such as “What’s My Line?” and “This Is Your Life,” where guests would be surprised with a retrospective of their life in front of a live studio audience, complete with appearances from old acquaintances and long-lost family. There were also …

How Destinys Childs The Writing’s On The Wall Became The Quintessential 1999 Album

Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson sat down at a table 20 years ago to reenact the “Godfather” scene from the 1996 film “Set It Off.” Their intentions for “The Writing’s on the Wall” were clear: get these fuckboys the hell up out of here. For the next 15 tracks, the Houston teens sang harmonious anthems letting haters know they were “So Good,” calling out a pressed “Bug a Boo” and asking why men do women wrong on “Hey Ladies.” And unlike their ballad-heavy debut album, the group rode the up-tempo beats with their distinct sing-rapping. 1999 was a remarkable year for the genre. That year, Whitney Houston’s “Heartbreak Hotel” with Kelly Price and Faith Evans peaked …

Rene Zellweger recalls the moment she overheard strangers discussing her face

(CNN)Despite acclaimed performances in films including “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and “Jerry Maguire,” Oscar-winning actress Rene Zellweger is not immune to the pitfalls of fame. Zellweger said they went on to say: “How could she do that? Why would she go and have surgery on her face like we wouldn’t know? She doesn’t look like herself, and you can’t just do that where you go and don’t look like yourself, cause we expect you to look like yourself.” She said the encounter left her momentarily stunned: “I thought, ‘Wow, that’s interesting. Anyway, here’s my stop.’” The famously private star, who plays Judy Garland in a forthcoming biopic, said things got even more awkward when the man got up just before her …

How ‘A Very Brady Renovation’ turned a house into a TV home

(CNN)Thanks to the magic of television, a charming but otherwise innocuous house in Studio City, CA, took on iconic status as the fabled residence where Mike and Carol Brady raised their mixed family brood over the course of five seasons (and many on-air reunions) of “The Brady Bunch.” Now, after HGTV purchased the house after the longtime owner died in 2018, the actors led by a team of the network’s popular remodeling hosts on “A Very Brady Renovation,” and the cleverly reworked and extended structure is an astonishingly perfect recreation, inside and out. “One of the reasons I thought that this HGTV deal was going to be big is because when the house first went on the market, long before …

Hater Gets Quickly Shut Down After Attacking Will Smith For Promoting His Sons Bottled Water

Celebrities and brands often go hand in hand, be it a sponsored deal, a partnership or their own brand. And while people naturally flock to products endorsed by their favorite actors, models and social media stars, critics of capitalism and consumerism bring out some legitimate points against such practices. Plenty of people shared similar sentiments when Will Smith decided to switch his career as an actor, rapper, and now a YouTuber for a day as a Boots UK sales assistant in 2018. It wasn’t that he felt bored or wanted some new experiences to spice things up in his life, no. The proud father was promoting his son Jaden’s brand of bottled water called ‘Just Water’. And as soon as …

The Steady Cultural Demise Of ‘American Beauty’

“For The Love Of 1999” When “American Beauty” nabbed the Oscar for Best Picture in March 2000, its win seemed forward-thinking. The movie “dealt with sex and drugs, blackmail, homophobia, infidelity and suburban dysfunction,” producer Dan Jinks proclaimed during his acceptance speech. “And in the middle of all this was a character named Ricky Fitts, who at one point says, ‘Sometimes there’s so much beauty in the world I feel like I can’t take it,’ and everyone in the audience knew exactly what he meant.”  Oh, how the mighty fall. How “American Beauty” declined is complex, and why it declined will vary based on whose perspective you hear. That’s often the case when something’s prestige shifts without a common denominator …
