The Twittering Machine by Richard Seymour review escape from dystopia

Twitter, texts, email the psychological needs driving todays vast and risky digital writing experiment The notoriety of postmodernism has waxed and waned over the past 40 years. While a frequent reference point in the identity politics and the chaos of Steven Pinker and a cluster of neoconservatives associated with the online magazine Quillette, the postmodern left has injected relativism and self-pity into liberal democracies, with all of the results we see around us today. Few appear to have any clue what ever referred to, nor any desire to find out. As Paul Klee painting, depicting mechanical birds whose song is manufactured to lure victims towards a pit. Superficially speaking, the book is a critique of digital platforms, screens, algorithms and …

Brown says she was forced into prostitution before 2004 killing, and celebrities, including Rihanna, had called for her release Cyntoia Brown has been released early from the Tennessee prison for women, where she was serving a life sentence for killing a man when she was 16 years old after being allegedly forced into prostitution. Kim Kardashian West, Rihanna and other celebrities had lobbied for Browns release. She was granted clemency in January by the outgoing governor, Bill Haslam. Now 31, Brown will remain on parole for 10 years, on the condition she does not violate any state or federal laws, holds a job and participates in regular counseling sessions, Haslams commutation says. Brown released a statement on Monday saying she …

Mark Mawstons best photograph: Yoko Ono’s electrifying power

She came on stage with a black silk bag over her head and walked straight into the mic stand. It didnt ruin anything though. The crowd were in raptures I took this shot of Yoko Ono 14 years ago, in 2005 at bagism a practice she and Lennon engaged in as a way to deindividualise speakers and emphasise their message by wearing a nondescript bag over their heads. So she came out with this black silk bag obscuring her vision, and walked straight into the mic stand. It didnt ruin anything though. The crowd were in raptures. In a split second when I managed to take my eyes off her, I realised that Sean Lennon, her and Johns son, was …

How ’30-50 Feral Hogs’ Became the New ‘Thoughts and Prayers’

Thirty to 50 unkillable feral hogs may or may not be terrorizing one Arkansas man's backyard, but they've definitely infiltrated Twitter. They've invaded the lyrics of songs from "Do Re Mi" to "Milkshake." They've reminded people of their dating histories and of bizarre medieval paintings. They've inspired strange hypothetical chat rooms and porcine updates to classic pieces of writing. (My favorite: "For sale/30-50 feral hogs/Never shot.") The feral hogs, all 30 to 50 of them, are just the kind of meme Twitterati are wont to latch onto—one so absurd that it's hilarious, and so hilarious that you'll almost forget it's macabre as hell. Puerto Rico swears in third governor in less than a week

(CNN)Puerto Rico’s Justice Secretary Wanda Vzquez Garced was sworn in Wednesday afternoon as the third governor that the financially and politically troubled island has had in less than a week. “In light of the decision by the Puerto Rico Supreme Court, I must step aside and support the Secretary of Justice of Puerto Rico,” he said. Pierluisi added, “This is a time when we must all unite for Puerto Rico, leaving behind any partisan, ideological or personal agendas. In other words, this is a time for unity of purpose for the benefit of Puerto Rico, until our people have the opportunity to choose their future leaders in next year’s elections.” Moments after his statement, the governor’s office tweeted a photo …

Photo Editing Is Ruining Our Mental HealthHere’s What We Can Do About It Betches

How many Photoshopped pictures have you come across today? One? Two? 15 Kardashian posts in a row? It’s almost impossible to tell, considering the ease with which various editing apps allow us to doctor ourselves. Unless, of course, you have a Photoshop wizard on retainer who will call that sh*t out in a regular column. But assuming you don’t (since apparently most celebrities don’t either), believe us when we say, photo manipulation is everywhere. It doesn’t take an expert to tell you that constantly staring at doctored photos of beautiful people will eventually take a toll on your mental health, but we checked in with one just to be safe. Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of speaking to clinical …

The Weird, Dark History of 8chan

Brennan, photographed in New City in 2014. But when Brennan’s wife opens the door to his apartment on an afternoon earlier this year, two small dogs pinging excitedly across the tiled floor and around his electric wheelchair, he looks far older. A pair of glasses sit slightly crooked on his face. He jokes about the weight he has gained since moving to the Philippines in 2014, where he lives in part because of the cheaper cost of living compared to the United States. Brennan split fully with the current owner of 8chan last year, but even in this new phase of his life—wife and dogs and all—his role as the gatekeeper of one of the internet’s most controversial sites remains …

Bella Thorne Started An Important Convo About Editing Your Photos Betches

I normally really don’t care about Bella Thorne, but she posted something today that is really cool and v v important. In this sick and twisted world we live in of Photoshop fails, influencers, and CGI people telling us what to look like, we definitely need reminders that real people don’t have these sicko Barbie proportions we see everywhere. If I see one more grown-ass adult woman with the waist of a toddler, I will start throwing sh*t. But seriously, that CGI model influencer sh*t really freaked me out. I don’t need to be told what I should look like by f*cking Woody from Toy Story (who is also a CGI model, in case you don’t understand what’s happening). Literally that …

Photoshop Fail Of The Week: An Instagram Faker To The Highest Degree Betches

In our weekly Photoshop Fail, we choose one celebrity or influencer Instagram that’s been edited poorly and show you what the tells are of a botched Photoshop job. This is to show you that the bodies you see on Instagram aren’t real, and pretty much every celebrity is editing their pics—even the people you wouldn’t expect. Moral of the story: don’t trust anybody on social media. I keep seeing pictures of this girl Natalie Halcro on Photoshop fail Instagrams. (Shout-out @beauty.false, they are amazing!) Apparently this woman has a reality show called Relatively Nat & Liv. Can anyone explain to me why? I don’t understand who she is or what she does or why we are watching her do those things. …

Gadgets, drug mules and a French accent: my life as a private investigator

Emmanuelle Welch was a journalist before becoming a PI. Now she tracks down embezzlers and the occasional lost teddy bear Im often asked how I chose the life of a private investigator. In my case it was an accident. PIs tend to be former law enforcement, but not always. Im French and worked as a journalist before I made the leap. I used to live in Los Angeles. A mens magazine asked me to do an article where I would track down people the magazine had written about years earlier and see how they were doing. It was incredibly difficult. I decided I wanted to get better at finding people. A local PI agency offered a course and I did …

Illinois Parents Reportedly Gave Up Custody Of Their Kids To Help Get College Scholarships

ProPublica and The Wall Street Journal each detailed the efforts in separate articles after uncovering dozens of applications filed by Chicago-area parents to financially divorce themselves from their kids over the past year and a half. That student was able to obtain about $47,000 in scholarships and federal Pell grants to attend a private university that costs $65,000 per year. “It’s a scam,” Andy Borst, the director of undergraduate admissions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, told ProPublica. “Wealthy families are manipulating the financial aid process to be eligible for financial aid they would not be otherwise eligible for. They are taking away opportunities from families that really need it.” Borst also spoke with ProPublica. Almost all of the cases cited …

(CNN)Ricardo Rossell, the outgoing governor of Puerto Rico, has called for a special legislative session to try to confirm Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia as the next secretary of state and possibly his successor.
