Arya, Lady Gaga and Avengers: The great escape

(CNN)A glittering gala celebrating the campiest fashion, a superhero flick that shattered box-office records, a fierce and mythical TV world of ice and fire — and Meghan and Harry’s new arrival, Archie. As Rob Picheta wrote, “The internet reveled in dissecting and poking fun at the most eye-catching fashion statements — and no one received the social media treatment more than Lady Gaga,” who displayed four different looks. “Avengers,” which Internet Movie Database says has grossed $2.3 billion worldwide and could eclipse “Avatar” as the biggest film of all time, certainly falls in the escapism category. But “Avengers” — and the Marvel cinematic universe — also reflects a historical arc, wrote Aaron Freedman. (Warning: A film spoiler lurks below.) When “Iron …

How three Twitter bans influenced Amanda Abbington

“But after a three-time Twitter ban, I’ve learned not to be quite so visceral in my anger or upset, just sit on it for a bit.” Posting controversial comments online has come back to haunt many younger celebrities, who grew up with social media. Emmerdale actress Shila Iqbal was recently fired from the soap for offensive historic tweets, while YouTuber Jack Maynard had to leave I’m A Celebrity for the same reason. But Abbington explains she has developed a new strategy when it comes to posting her opinions online. Brunei Says It Won’t Enforce Death Penalty For Gay Sex After Massive Outcry

The small Southeast Asian country sparked an outcry when it Brunei has consistently defended its right to implement the laws, elements of which were first adopted in 2014 and which have been rolled out in phases since then. Some crimes already command the death penalty in Brunei, including premeditated murder and drug trafficking, but no executions have been carried out since the 1990s. “As evident for more than two decades, we have practiced a de facto moratorium on the execution of death penalty for cases under the common law. This will also be applied to cases under the SPCO which provides a wider scope for remission.” The vastly wealthy sultan, who once piloted his own 747 airliner to meet former …

Brunei backs down on gay sex death penalty after international backlash

(CNN)Brunei will not impose the death penalty on those convicted of having gay sex, in an apparent bid to temper international condemnation following its roll out of strict new Islamic laws last month. The tiny oil-rich Asian kingdom became the first East Asian country to introduce Sharia law at a national level in 2014, introducing the legislation and associated penalties in stages. The country initially defended its new legal code, claiming it focused “more on prevention and punishment,” but the growing backlash appears to have forced the kingdom’s hand. In his speech on Sunday, the sultan said there had been a number of “misconceptions” about the laws which he acknowledged may have caused “apprehension.” “However, we believe that once these …

Peter Mayhew, Chewbacca in ‘Star Wars,’ dies at 74

(CNN)Peter Mayhew, the original Chewbacca, has died, according to his agent. “He put his heart and soul into the role of Chewbacca and it showed in every frame of the films from his knock-kneed running, firing his bowcaster from the hip, his bright blue eyes, down to each subtle movement of his head and mouth,” his family said. “But, to him, the Star Wars family meant so much more to him than a role in a film.” Mayhew started the Peter Mayhew Foundation to support people in crisis situations, including providing food and supplies for the children of Venezuela during their recent road to freedom. “His kindness, generosity and care will live on in the Peter Mayhew Foundation with Angie …

With her or with him? How the sexual attack of an Indian actor inspired a powerful feminist movement

Kerala, India (CNN)After Rima Kallingal’s friend and fellow actor was abducted and sexually assaulted in early 2017, she remembers watching the media coverage of the attack in horror. Today, the group’s membership features some of the biggest female names in Mollywood — as the Malayalam-language film industry in the southern Indian state of Kerala is known — as well as technicians and lesser-known actors. The WCC predates Hollywood’s Times Up campaign, which was sparked by multiple allegations of sexual assault against powerful director Harvey Weinstein and others in the #MeToo movement. Weinstein has repeatedly denied all allegations against him. It also comes at a time when feminist activist movements are gaining ground in Kerala. In January 2019, millions of women …

The Clintons are getting into podcasting

Washington (CNN)Bill Clinton wants to tell you a story. And the famously verbose former president is getting into podcasting to do just that. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is not formally involved in the podcast, but she may appear in it at some point to support the foundation’s work, Minassian said. The 2016 Democratic nominee is not a principal player in the foundation but she has attended foundation events and helped in some of its efforts. Podcasting is a somewhat natural next step for the former president, whose love of telling stories is legendary in Arkansas, his home state, and across the country. The often-loquacious President — his speech at the 1988 Democratic National Convention was 33 minutes, double …

Why India’s political parties are turning to Bollywood for election candidates

Mumbai, India (CNN)For decades, Urmila Matondkar has enjoyed a successful career as a leading lady in Bollywood. In that environment, and as this election increasingly looks to be a close call, parties in recent weeks have sought to capitalize on star power — especially, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which had added a number of celebrities to its line-up. This month, Daler Mehndi, one of India’s most famous singers, joined the BJP. He follows cricketer Gautam Gambhir, actress Jaya Prada and singer Hans Raj Hans, who all recently joined the BJP to run in this cycle. When stars announce their campaigns, their first political rallies are almost guaranteed huge crowds, says Komal Nahta, film trade analyst: “They have that …

FBI officials learned of a threatening forum post 5 minutes before synagogue attack

(CNN)Tipsters alerted the FBI to a threatening post on the anonymous message board 8chan minutes before a gunman opened fire at a California synagogue, an FBI official told CNN Monday. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday in San Diego County Superior Court. The FBI was not able to determine the author of the 8chan post or the location of their intended attack before the shooting. The 8chan post linked to a hate speech-laden manifesto signed with the name John Earnest. The letter talks about killing Jewish people without making reference to Poway, San Diego or Congregation Chabad. On its Twitter account, 8chan claims they deleted the post nine minutes after it was published. CNN has reached out to …

Fyre Festival Secrets Even The Documentaries Missed

The Oren Aks, the fan favorite from Hulu’s Fyre Festival documentary, “Fyre Fraud,” told HuffPost there’s “endless material” that hasn’t gone public. Aks previously worked as an employee of Jerry Media, which was founded by Elliot Tebele of the controversial Instagram meme account FuckJerry. Jerry Media helped promote Fyre Fest and assisted with the festival’s social media and marketing.  The festival ended in chaos and McFarland serving six years in jail for “People are always like … is there more?” Aks said. “And I’m like, ’Oh, absolutely, there’s more. … We’re just getting started here.”  McFarland’s team struggled with logistical problems in the months before the festival, to say the least. Aks said there was an internal push to do something …

Stars Don’t Have To Play Nice With Critics Anymore, And It Shows

On Thursday, Olivia Munn logged on to Twitter and an intellectually incoherent, utterly unnecessary short essay. (Stars ― they really are just like us.) The untitled piece took as its subject the fashion blog Go Fug Yourself, a site run by writers Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan that features brief, snarky critiques of celebrity outfits. A site, Munn argues, that is little more than a brutal appendage of the patriarchy. One might describe the essay as a work of feminist media criticism, save that she seems to understand neither feminism, nor the media, nor criticism. It’s not entirely clear that she understands essays, either. It is instead a perfect example of something else: the ever-growing power imbalance between rich, famous …
